My Mentoring Journey by Clare Concannon

Founder of Positive Experience Training

 Positive Experience Training Course Herfordshire

Most people hit a wall at some point in their life, I did when I ran my first half marathon and again when my luck was down in my career. The rejection at interview was frustrating, however an informal mentor who was a neighbour shared some valuable suggestions. Registering on my teacher training course had an impact on my interview success securing work and a day release for University.

Thinking the unthinkable, I did not want to be a school teacher, lecturing was a good pathway that combined industry experience with my passion for developing people; also having the flexibility of being employed and self-employed.

My business advisor / mentor at that time had a challenge on his hands, he saw something I could not see- a potential and influential networker.

"First seek to understand, then be understood"

 - Stephen Covey

With a formal mentor at hand I dared to explore networking events, only to be uninspired with my first experience. We worked on this and as a follower of the author, Stephen Covey, walked the talk of “First Seek to Understand, then be understood”

My perception and understanding developed into a surprising passion and natural talent.

Idea to Implementation

This award-winning programme was based on a combination of facilitated peer group mentoring, coaching, business support and monthly networking events and business showcase. The impact of this programme reached far beyond the table into a trusted network of specialist who supported the programme for over four years and are still part of a vital network that goes from strength to strength.

More recently I have started a small group of trusted peers, we meet every quarter to overcome challenges and explore opportunities. The concept of going Beyond the Table is also part of the mentoring offer which is flexible and easily implemented across all sectors.

Trusted clients also enjoy a brokerage arrangement to introduce new consultants to projects.

Experience beyond academia

Whist committed to courses that enhance my academic and soft skills, the greatest learning for me is from real life experiences.

Rescuing dogs is my most challenging yet rewarding hobby. An experienced dog trainer takes me through rigorous instruction so I can enhance my understanding of my best friend’s behaviour.
